FOM@Play: Migration, identity and transnational discourses

Granada, 2-5 September 2025

#WHAT IS FOM@PLAY?

Freedom of movement at play: EU citizens’ identity and transnational discourses is a cooperation partnership in Higher Education KA220-HED funded by the European Commission

FOM@PLAY is an international project that is collecting, analysing and will soon disseminate stories of EU citizens that live and work in an EU country different from their own.

Using cutting-edge digital technologies, corpus-linguistics and critical discourse analysis, FOM@PLAY provides opportunities for engagement and learning to students and staff in the institutions involved and the wider public in the EU. Awareness activities include an EU online seminar, a summer school, an exhibition, international and national events and a social media campaign.

FOM@PLAY seeks to promote EU citizenship values across the participating institutions and countries by devising alternative pedagogic approaches. We seek to achieve the following results:  We will (a) put together and share free digital resources with EU citizens’ alternative discourses on migration experiences;  (b) foster awareness about EU values and FOM in the target users of the project; (c) develop off-the-shelf resources for educators and citizens across the EU on migrants’ lives and FOM.

FOM@PLAY sets out to contribute to the prevention of racism and discrimination by facilitating the dissemination and analysis of alternative discourses around “migration” within EU countries that can counterbalance hate speech against migrants and EU citizens from other EU countries.

The evolving landscape, especially shaped by the effects of Brexit, and populism, extremism, or the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, has significantly shifted perceptions of critical issues such as freedom of movement and, consequently, migration. Hatred on social media and violent behaviours are some of the alarming consequences of this new reality.

The University of Granada, alongside the Universities of Zaragoza, Perpignan, L’Orientale, and Parthenope in Naples, is actively participating in a project led by the University of Murcia, focused on the aforementioned initiative (FOM@Play, KA220-HED-236D1825).

In its essence, FOM@Play aims to be a key reference in understanding the profound impact of freedom of movement on EU citizens and the broader EU project. To achieve this, Europeans living in countries other than their own have been interviewed to share their experiences and perspectives on identity, among other topics.

In line with our commitment to advancing knowledge and facilitating a meaningful debate, from 2 to 5 September 2025, the teams involved in FOM@Play will present their findings, and look forward to engaging with other fellow scholars who share an interest in the project and its related themes, encouraging them contribute their own research on migration and freedom of movement from their own angles.
